One of my favorite songs from my high school years was, “Come As You Are” written by Brent Helming. This song is a simple praise chorus, but it has a message that we would do well to remember each day. Here are the lyrics:
“Come as you are, Come and drink from the living water That flowed from His hands, Flowed from His side
Come as you are, Come and bathe in the healing water Cleansing from sin, Releasing new life
Draw near to Him, And He’ll draw near to you He’s been waiting for you to call on His Name So come, come as you are.”
When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well in John chapter 4, He described Himself as the living water. He described this living water as being capable of leaving the drinker free from thirst forever. We know that from Him, lives were healed, sins were forgiven, and redemption was achieved. The living water from Jesus’ life would be something else indeed.
While we have the Bible to testify to the power of this living water, it seems like our world has plenty of men and women who are not interested in a drink. Sure they would love to be healed of their illnesses, or know that they can receive eternal life, but they think the cost will be too great. Even many who claim to be believers of Christ often find it inconvenient or undesirable to seek Jesus for His living water.
What I love most about this song is that it is a simple offering of advice and hope. To those who hear, the writer reminds the listeners that there is a source of the healing and strength you seek still available for you to consider. This comes from Jesus, Himself. He then invites you the same way Christ did all those years ago, “Draw near to Him!”
Towards the beginning of August I wrote a blog referencing how we cannot expect to be healed if we do not go see a doctor. If you truly want healing you need to go to a source capable of that healing you seek. Helming’s song calls those listening to come as they are and draw near to the living water we all seek. the only catch is that you have to make the effort to come.
Are you hoping for personal struggles to get better? Come to Jesus, the fountain of living water, and watch what will happen as you let Him fill your life. Stop thinking things will get better as they are, and choose to get the help you need. He wants you to come to him, so what’s stopping you?

There is truth in our world, and it lies within the word of the One who created the world. It is my prayer that my thoughts and writings echo this truth and inspire you to seek it for your life today!
