Can I have a Pen?

As some of you will know, I work as a college admission’s counselor. I’m one of those guys who visits high schools and tells students about our college and what it has to offer them. Obviously this particular field requires some interpersonal skills, but it’s always nice to have something that breaks the ice. That’s where the pens come in.

Regardless of age, color, or gender, just about anyone will be happy to take a free pen. Sometimes the pen will do its job and open a door to a meaningful conversation. There are other times that the person taking the pen is doing everything they can to avoid talking with you, but they still want to have a pen.

I’m not looking to get too deep or reach for a way to bring God into the discussion, but as I was recruiting late Thursday night God just gave me this thought; ” What would it be like if our Faith appealed to so many people just like those pens did?”

As I thought, I came to consider how the message of Jesus does appeal to everyone. Are you in need of hope? Come to Jesus and find hope for this life and the next. Are you looking for freedom from guilt? Find Jesus, repent, and feel freedom like nothing else life can offer. Are you looking for some direction in life? Turn to Jesus who claimed to be the Way, and watch as He leads you in paths of righteousness.

You see our faith is relevant and appealing to just about everyone, so why doesn’t it seem that people want it? I thought to myself, looked at my display table and saw one obvious answer. The pens do not help us in recruitment efforts if we don’t have them on the table! Could it be that we struggle to find those who desire our faith because they rarely see it on display? Think of how many people you know who call themselves Christians and yet their lives have little or nothing that shows people who they claim to have their faith in?

Lord, forgive your people for failing to put your love and grace on display for all to see. Would you bless us with a faith that is easy to see and true to every teaching of your scriptures. May it be that as we live our lives you have called us to, that all those we meet will want to have what we can offer them through you!

There is truth in our world, and it lies within the word of the One who created the world.  It is my prayer that my thoughts and writings echo this truth and inspire you to seek it for your life today!
