Please forgive me if this post makes you hungry, but have you ever tasted REAL maple syrup? Maple syrup has an unmistakable taste compared to Mrs. Butterworth, Aunt Jemima, or any other popular brand of syrup. However this is a reality that only those who have tasted REAL maple syrup would know. As many would expect, the major brands for pancake syrup are all made with corn syrup, so getting the real taste of true maple syrup is hard. In fact, after recently tasting true maple syrup for the first time myself, I was shocked at just how different the real thing and what I thought was real syrup are.
A similar thought could be mentioned in regards to REAL Christian faith. There are plenty of lifestyles out there that many would call Christian, but would they stand the test if Jesus was to examine their faith? After all, there are some who profess to be Christians, but they also will tell you plainly that they do not think Jesus would have a problem with their pre-marital sex. Others would say that they have the Christian Faith down pat, but they could not tell you the last time they evangelized, gave to the needy or attended church. While I could go to great length to discuss these various issues, I will simply say that I think some people who profess to be Christians have never experienced true Christianity.
Jesus encountered some Pharisees in John Chapter 9 with a similar situation. These Pharisees had plenty of theological knowledge and did all sorts of “good” things, but Jesus claimed they were still missing something; they were still blind. Here’s the final verse of John 9;
“Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, “We see,” your sin remains.'” John 9:41 [NASB]
Suppose I invited you over for breakfast, and pancakes were on the menu. As I put a plate in front of you, I offer to you a bottle of REAL maple syrup. After putting some of that syrup on your pancakes, you take your first bite. Would you know the unique taste of maple syrup or would you be asking me where the Hungry Jack is? As someone who has tasted the real thing, I know that anyone who tastes true syrup for the first time will be in for an unexpected surprise.
This would be the same with many people who claim to be Christians today. If Jesus were to come to you and offer to lead you in true discipleship, would it be something you recognized, or would you be shocked at how different everything would be? Perhaps this is why many will say to Him one day that they are His disciples, but He will reply that He never knew them.
Let me remind you that it is not any harder to know what REAL Christianity is than it is to know what REAL maple syrup tastes like. The only thing my wife and I had to do was to buy true Maple Syrup, and then taste what we bought. In light of the Christian Faith, all we have to do is open the Bible and make full-hearted efforts to live as Christ asked.
Are you sure the Christian life you are living is the real deal, or just a popular and commonly accepted knock-off brand?
