This hymn won’t win awards for one of the oldest in our pews, but it does have a place in the hearts of many believers. It was written by Thomas Dorsey in 1932 after losing his wife in childbirth, and the child soon after. Obviously, this would be a very trying time in any man’s life, and Mr. Dorsey turned to God and asked to be led through the trial. Nearly 40 years later, the song was on the first album from one of the pillars of Christian Music, Andrea Crouch and the Disciples. Sure enough, what was once a new song is now a mainstay in many hymnals, currently Hymn 450 in the Baptist Hymnal revised in 2008.
